The speech structure

An effective speech consists of three major parts: opening, body and conclusion.

The opening should immediately catch the audience’s attention.

The audience wants to know what the speaker is going to talk about, so the beginning of the speech should satisfy this need.

A good opening could be:

– A startling question or a challenging statement.

– An appropriate quotation, illustration, or story.

– A display of some object or picture.

It would be better to avoid:

– An apologetic statement.

– A story or joke that does not relate to the topic of the speech.

– A common observation delivered in an ordinary manner.

Keep in mind: a great opening can set the direction for a powerful presentation.
